The second annual women’s charity table tennis tournament took place at the Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre on September 6. Organised by Julie Snowdon, a Table Tennis England staff member and centre secretary, the tournament brought together 14 female players, mostly from the centre’s monthly ladies-only sessions. This was clearly a community-driven event. Unlike professional tournaments, it focused on fun and fair play. The format consisted of two group rounds, then a main draw and a consolation final, giving players of different levels a chance to compete. The most striking result was charitable: the event raised £650 for Breast Cancer Now and collected more than 100 bras for recycling. These bras will later be converted into fuel or reused in industry, reducing waste and supporting research. It was a creative way to turn a small sports gathering into a meaningful campaign. “We want to create a comfortable and safe playground for women while raising funds for breast cancer prevention,” said Julie Snowdon. Her words show the humanitarian purpose of the event. As centre secretary, she successfully encouraged many women to join, building a table tennis community. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, so raising awareness is vital. Events like this not only encourage physical activity but also spread messages about regular screening. Bra recycling also offers dual benefits for the environment and scientific research. Sport has a positive impact on physical and mental health. For women, especially middle-aged ones, table tennis improves agility, reflexes and reduces stress. The tournament inspired women to leave their screens and join social activities. This is especially meaningful in the stressful modern lifestyle. The Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre plans to hold its next ladies-only session on November 1, from 10 am to 12 noon. This is an opportunity for local women to get familiar with the sport. In addition, donations are still accepted through Julie’s Just Giving page to support breast cancer funds. Community support is a great encouragement for the organisers. The success of this year’s event will be a foundation for future years. It shows that even a small-scale event can bring positive change. Hopefully, this model of combining sports and charity will grow, not only in Milton Keynes but also elsewhere.
